The Grade 12 Classical Civilizations students recently completed their research and design project on Roman shields. Challenged with the task of producing authentic designs on pre-made Roman style shields the students discovered quickly that scholarly sources on the topic can be elusive.
The internet is chalked full of gaming and re-enactor supplies that present themselves as period accurate shields for various Roman time periods. Filtering the good sources from the bad was an important goal of the project. Providing evidence and source citations for their design elements was paramount before commencing the painting of a shield.
Working with their original design templates students painted their shields during class and if necessary during Grove Time. The completed shields were both authentic and pleasing to the eye. I am always amazed and very pleased with the level of scholarly research and attention to design detail that my students put forward on this yearly project. The class has nominated three peer shields to be put on display in the Social Science hallway until a new group of students challenge themselves to achieve Roman Scutum design glory!
