A Spanish Experience

By Libby Dalrymple

The learning of language and culture can happen at school, but to really make the learning come alive, it is important to get outside the four walls of the classroom and explore language and culture in an experiential way.

That was the goal of the recent field trip for Grade 10, 11 and 12 Spanish students.  They spent the day in Toronto, using their Spanish in an authentic context and broadening their cultural understanding.  The students started the day, at the Lula Lounge, with two dance workshops: Mexican fandango and Cuban salsa.  They impressed their dance instructors and Spanish teachers with their energetic participation and talent!  This is a group that can really dance!!

After a delicious Mexican lunch, the group went to Kensington Market for "La Carrera Increíble" (The Amazing Race).  This series of activities and challenges gave them an opportunity to visit many different businesses that are owned by Spanish-speaking Canadians who have immigrated to this country from many different countries.  The students found out information, made purchases, had conversations and made short videos as they travelled throughout the neighbourhood.

The students were incredibly open-minded and engaged throughout the entire day.  They made the most of this unique opportunity to use their Spanish!
