1st Track and Field
Coaches: Clark Davis, Paige Frigault
The 1st Track and Field team opened their spring season at York University for a tune-up meet with 20 other independent schools featuring approximately 490 athletes on Wednesday, April 6th. Having just a handful of practices under their belt, LCS put together a strong showing across all events.

Sophie Welch finished 1st in both the Junior Girls 400m (1:09.87) and the 60m dash, while Kiera McCloskey impressed with a strong rookie performance in the Junior Girls High-Jump - finishing 1st overall with a winning height of 1.35m. Lizzy McLean also put together a solid day and finished 2nd in the Senior Girls High-Jump (1.35m), while Sequoia Richards finished 3rd overall in the Senior Girls Long-Jump (4.48m). Janelle Lawes also had a very successful opening meet with a 1st place finish in the Midget Girls 60m dash.  Finally, the girls capped off the day with first overall in the Senior Girls 4 x 200m relay with a time of 1:58.06.

On the boys' side, Wil Brawn put his long-distance speed on display and finished 1st overall in the Senior Boys 800m (2:13.41) and 4th overall (4:51) in the 1500m.  Tobi Omole also finished 3rd overall in Senior Boys high jump with a height of 1.60m and was inches away from a top finish in the Senior Boys 60m dash if not for a foot-fault. The coaching staff are very proud of their athletes!

1st Girls’ Soccer
Coaches: Janice Runza, Rebecca Calder
A big shout out to the 1st Girls' Soccer team who won Pool A in the soccer tournament at Trent University on Friday April 15, 2016. The team started out strong in their first game at 8:00 a.m. against a tough opponent, St. Pete's, defeating them 1-0 (Ally Lovick). At 12:00 p.m. the team faced another challenging local team, TASSS, but were able to come out ahead with a score of 2-0 (Sequoia Richards, Caitlin Lovick). Despite being a bit fatigued, the girls had to face R.S. McLaughlin from Oshawa at 4:00 p.m. R.S. scored first but LCS quickly tied it up, and with only about a minute left in the game LCS scored after battling back and forth with R.S. in the box. LCS won 2-1 (Rachel Thomson, Sophie Welch) making them the Pool A Champion. Congratulations to the all the girls and to Clara, Sophie, and Anna from the Jr. Girls’ Soccer team who helped us out. What a great way to start our season! Coaches Calder, Hew and Runza are all very proud.

1st Boys’ Rugby
Coaches: Peter Andras, Zach Barr, Travis Fuchs

A Side: On April 27, the 1st Boys’ Rugby team (A Side) played in their first tournament of three games at The Grove. The boys were still getting their legs under them for the first game against Hilfield Strathallan (L 7-17). From there, the boys won the next two games against Ridley College (W 15-7) and Royal St. George's College (W 38-7). We’re looking forward to building on our 2-1 record in our next tournament at Ridley College on May 4.

B Side: The 1st Boys’ Rugby team (B-Side) team travelled to Country Day School for their first games of the season. They had a good day of learning and a few tough matches to start the season. In the first game, Greenwood College had our number and we fought hard but came up short losing 24-0. Taking what they learned from the first match and focussing on our strengths we were able to keep the next two games close. Our second game was against the home team. It was a close match but Dan Pazos was able to get into the try zone to score the first LCS try of the season. Country Day School answered with one fairly quickly. This was followed by an inspired run but Tobi Omole to put the LCS squad ahead by 5. Matt Lovick followed with an excellent kick to convert. LCS was ahead by 7. CDS forced a great run back putting them within reach close to the end of the game. They then turned around and poached an LCS ball taking it in deep into LCS territory and they were lucky to take it over the try line in a close call, during the last play of the game. LCS lost 15-12. They played another tough match and worked out a few issues in the third game against the team from Rosseau Lake college. Despite the 17-7 final, it was another close match and LCS came up short.

Taking note of errors and focussing on maintaining possession of the ball LCS took over and played an awesome match against the Hillfield Strathallan team. The team clicked and figured out a few solid plays that worked for them. Focussing on the basics they took some inspired full field runs and managed an entire team effort. Tobi Omole scored in the first half and second half as did Ross Ramsay with 2 more tries. In a final full-field run, Ross was tired and looked to pass and giving it to Matt Lovick for an awesome over the shoulder pass, who went on to touch it down. Matt converted 3 of the try's and Lakefield won their first game of the season 31-5. They travel to Hillfield Strathallan in Hamilton next week to play another five-team tournament.

1st Ultimate
Coaches: Todd Melville, Mary Elizabeth Konrad
The 1st Ultimate team travelled to Bayview Glen on Wednesday for their first game of the season.  In challenging, windy conditions, LCS scored the first point but then found it difficult to consistently move the disc against the more experienced BVG squad.  There were great defensive plays for both teams, with Trevor Smith the stand-out LCS player earning 5 defensive blocks. In the end, the strong BVG team won 15-3. The team's next game is Wednesday against a combined Havergal-Crescent School team at Cherry Beach park in Toronto.

1st Girls’ Soccer
Coaches: Janice Runza, Rebecca Calder
The 1st Girls' Soccer team hosted Trafalgar Castle on Wednesday, April 27 for their first league game of the season.  Despite LCS’ dominating possession we were unable to hit the net.  Trafalgar also came out strong and caught LCS a bit on their heels, scoring 2 goals in the first half.  LCS re-grouped at half-time and came out strong in the second half, scoring 3 goals (Alex Westcott, Frederique Roy and Sequoia Richards).  The coaches are incredibly proud of the team's effort, their ability to dig deep and battle fatigue right up to the final whistle.

Jr. Girls’ Soccer
Coaches: Danielle Labrosse, Borana Sarcevic
On Wednesday, April 27th, the Junior Girls Soccer team made their debut on Andy Harris Field at LCS. We welcomed St. Mildred's-Lightbourn School and played under the bright sunshine. This first game was one of the most brilliantly played defensive games. Pilar Martin was incredible in goal and is fearless when faced with an attack. She was strongly supported by Anna Rasmus, Natalia Del Barrio, Isabell Hall and Laura Pede, who were amazing at moving the ball out of our half. Thanks to all the talent up front, the game ended 3-1 thanks to a goal by Sophie Milburn and two by Clara Mindjimba. Great start to the season!!

1st Rowing
Coaches: Su Armstrong, Jessica Reaume
Back in March a hardy and dedicated crew joined our Rowing program.  This team is coming together to put its first crews on the water competitively on Mother’s Day (May 8, 2016).

With many athletes new to rowing we had much to celebrate after our first competitive indoor Icebreaker 2016 Event at Trent University Athletic Centre.  Otto Jonestki, Ross Hutchison, Tori Quick and Chris Gill were champions in their categories.  Many of our LCS crew were also in the top three of their category including: Anton Ernst, Thomas Rozemas, Zach Masciangelo and Issey Conheady (On exchange from Ballarat Grammar School in Australia).  The effort from all team members was extraordinary.  The team relay was the most fun event of the day with Senior, Junior and Novice teams all heading off against each other.  Indoor rowing (on an erg) sets up an athlete for the season. Rowing is a sport of discipline, and hard work before the joy and excitement of being on the water can be fully felt and embraced.

Rowing on the canal started early this year, as the ice left the Otonobee River in the first week of April.  Over the past month we have seen all sorts of conditions.  The most recent sunshine is a big lift to our spirits and has helped us maximize this portion of our training.  Our first rowing regatta is the Mother’s Day Regatta on the Otonobee River and Trent Canal at Peterborough Rowing Club on Sunday May 8.

Good Luck to all rowing athletes on the 8th!

1st Boys’ Tennis
Coaches: Sarah Thompson, Sam Wilson, Katrina Brennan, Derek Doucet
On Wednesday, the 1st Boys’ Tennis suffered some tough losses in their first matches of the season against Royal St. George's School and St. Michael's College at the Mayfair West in Toronto. Ben Dahler brought up the team morale winning 8-6 against Royal St. George's top player, Jack Cohen. We look forward to demonstrating our true potential in the upcoming games.
