Coaches: Peter Andras, Zach Barr, Travis Fuchs
On May 24, the 1st Boys’ Rugby team (A Side) took to the field at LCS for the CISAA Sr. Boys Div. 1 Rugby 7’s Championship. In the semi-final game, LCS came out on top topping Royal St. George’s College 29-12. After a bit of a rest, the boys returned to the field for the gold medal game. It was a close hard fought match with LCS ultimately beating Ridley College 26-19 to earn the gold medal.
The 1st Boys’ Rugby team (A Side) finished the season with a 13-1 record, outscoring opponents (excluding tournaments) 423-91. The coaches could not be more proud of the players effort this season and wish all athletes a safe and restful break.
Jr. Boys’ Rugby
Coaches: Garret Hart, Colin Simpson
This has been a rebuilding year for the Jr. Boys’ Rugby team. For most of the 15 boys it was their first full season playing this tough, demanding game. Our three returning players helped encourage the newcomers in practice and our Australian exchange student, Victor Tessmann, took control on the pitch during our games. Our team's inexperience made this a challenging season in many respects, but it was wonderful to see the great improvements the boys made over the course of the last 12 weeks!
The team finished up their season at the CISAA Junior Boys Division II 7's Championship Tournament, hosted by Country Day School. It was a perfect day for rugby and the boys took to the field against Ridley College, Greenwood College School and Country Day School. The competition was tough, but the boys did manage to put some point on the board. Tries were scored by Pablo Suarez Lopez, Brendan Rutherford, James Hubble and Bernardo Castillon Gomez. Eduardo Martinez added points with a few well kicked conversions. The boys played their best rugby of the season at this tournament and were also able to watch some exciting rugby games played by the other teams. We hope this will inspire them to play rugby in the future.
1st Girls’ Rugby
Coaches: Stephanie Kruzich, Natasha Turner
The field was soft but the loss was hard for the 1st Girls’ Rugby team last week. Despite the punishing tackles by Ether Liu, Amanda Huang and Tara Piggott, it was Havergal who came out on top. LCS gave up two early tries in the first half but then came back with a vengeance in the second half, scoring 2 tries in return. Both of LCS’ tries were scored by two three quarter field runs by Tess Wilson. Allie Avard, Elena Martinez Sanchez and Regan MacDonald’s incredible agility were feared by the opposition but they could not manage to get past HC’s aggressive defensive line. Havergal added another try in the second half to make the final score 15-10. The girls wrap up their season having gained a lot of knowledge about the game and have become a well-developed squad for next year.
1st Girls’ Soccer
Coaches: Janice Runza, Rebecca Calder
On Wednesday, May 25, the 1st Girls' Soccer team faced The York School in a semi-final match. As the girls finished first in their league, LCS was able to host. The first half of the game was definitely a battle as, despite maintaining a good portion of the possession, LCS was unable to hit the net more than once. Fortunately during the second half the girls “dug deep” despite very hot conditions and were able to dominate, winning 4-1. Goal scorers were: Ally Lovick (2), Rachel Thomson and Victoria Boisclair. With the win the team has secured a spot in the Finals on home turf on Friday, May 27, at 3:30 p.m. against Holy Trinity School. The coaches are proud of the players and wish them the best of luck this afternoon!
