1st Track and Field
Coaches: Paige Frigault, Clark Davis
The 1st Track and Field team finished their spring season at the Metro Track & Field Championship at Birchmount Stadium on May 25th and 26th.  Competing against over 120 schools from across the GTA, Lakefield put together an admirable performance amidst tough competition.  Keira McCloskey finished 12th in the Midget Girls High Jump with a height of 1.25m, while Lizzy McLean finished 14th in the Senior Girls Discus Throw with a distance of 18.22m.  Sequoia Richards worked hard on back-to-back days, finishing 15th in the Senior Girls 200m dash (28.06) and 8th in the Discus Throw (21.45m).  While Sophie Welch finished 10th (13.68), 9th (1:04.20), and 12th (2:33.93) in the Junior Girls 100m, 400m, and 800m dashes, respectively.  Janelle Lawes grinded through a hard earned Midget Girls 100m dash on the first day, finishing 12th with a time of 13.28.  However, the highlight came on the second day, where she made the finals of the 200m dash and finished with a time of 26.95 - good for 4th place overall and a qualifying spot at the OFSAA Track & Field Championships at the University of Windsor next weekend.

Coaches Frigault and Davis are very proud of their athletes, and they would like to thank them for all of their hard work, enthusiasm, and dedication this season.

1st Girls’ Soccer
Coaches: Janice Runza, Rebecca Calder
On Friday May 27, the 1st Girls' Soccer team faced Holy Trinity School for the DII Championship.  LCS came out strong and Rachel Thomson was able to capitalize from the left wing, scoring our first goal.  Unfortunately HTS quickly tied it up with a long, hard shot outside the 18 yd box.  Tied at the half, LCS re-grouped and knew that they would need to battle and 'leave nothing in the tank' as the next 45 minutes would be key.  Rachel Thomson scored again early in the 2nd 1/2 and LCS was able to hold onto the 2-1 lead for a while, but then for the last 20 minutes of the game HTS seemed to gain strength.  Despite fatigue and the hot temperatures, LCS never gave up and battled until that final whistle, but were unable to hit the net, losing a tough game 4-2.  LCS was represented well and the coaches are proud of the effort of the players.  Congratulations to all of the players for winning the silver medal!

1st Rowing
Coaches: Su Armstrong, Jessica Reaume, Felicia Neil
“The bigger the challenge, the bigger the feeling of accomplishment at the end of it.” - A quote from Roz Savage (first woman to row across three oceans - Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans).

Rowing is a sport of clear accomplishments to celebrate.  This week we are celebrating our hard work, strong results and growth in spirit.

Over the past weekend, the 1st Rowing team rose to their year-end challenge and travelled to Lake Fanshawe in London, Ontario for the Doug and Sam Wells High School Regatta.  Four boats took to the water to compete. The LCS Junior Boys Four with coxwain competed strong in the first heat of the day. This novice boat of rowers (Ryan Hough, Thomas Rozema, Peter McEnery, Jason Chen, and Anton Ernst) put in their best 2 km of the season in a well fought race, passing Upper Canada’s Junior crew in the last 200 m. Our second boat, Otto Jonetzki and Tommy Quick competed in the Junior Men’s Double race  with a strong finish and fighting for third place in their heat.  Senior women’s double (Tori Quick and Claire Campbell) placed in their heat, and moved on to finals. In the final race, the girls showed great grit taking on a boat in the last 100m meters to finish fourth over the day.

Road trips and training days are filled with memories and this crew will be remembered for how they supported each other and came together to accomplish so much in their short season, their spirit through extreme conditions (the very cold days of early April and the hot days last weekend), and the fun they had together including our team dinner and regatta road trip.
Special thanks to two of our training crew. Firstly, to Paige Bonner who as a senior coxie  who trained Ryan as the junior coxie and led the junior boys through practices when needed. Secondly, to Olivia Thompson who was there to jump into boats, check equipment and built her own rowing skills throughout the season.

A boat doesn’t move forward if each one is rowing their own way. It all comes together as a team pulls together.
