Yoga Comes Alive in the Woods

By Olivia Gao '17

In the past two weeks, I have had amazing meditations in the forest with 10 other yoginis from Grade 9 to 12. We went out into the forest in the afternoons to enjoy the refreshing fall weather and began with the practice of QiGong, which is an ancient Chinese practice.

This season is the best time for the practice of QiGong as the air is full of the taste of the harvest. The fresh air, gentle wind and the rays of sunshine falling from the trees truly helped us appreciate our natural environment. We also cherished our time in the forest embracing the trees while practicing yoga poses. Standing beside a tree, we practiced movements such as  “Mountain” and the three forms of “Warrior.” During the meditations in the forest, l felt free from the stresses from life. It seemed that I could extract all the negative energies into my palms and throw it into the earth underneath.

What is more amazing is that we also had tea meditation on Wednesday out in the forest in the early afternoon when the sunshine was the warmest. We meditated with a special tea called “Goddess;” the scent of raspberry leaf along with the flavour of nature made the yoga/tea meditation even more enjoyable.
