Our international student community have been engaged is some fun and exciting activities during the month of November. As a way of celebrating culture and getting together with friends, special dinners have taken place with students from Germany, Romania, Belgium, Austria, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Korea, Japan, China and Taiwan. At these dinners, students were treated to some tastes of home here at LCS. Guests were hosted by Jen Horrigan, Coordinator of International Student Activities, and Grade 12 Seniors-in-Charge of International Students, Iona Pena, Shell Zhao and Jennifer Yang. Many students participated in selecting the menu, shopping for food items and preparing the meal and everyone enjoyed the authentic options offered at the dinners. A room filled with delicious food, great conversation, laughter and music is a wonderful place to be and the small comforts of home bring great joy to our students who have come from so far to join our community.
During the November Break, many of our international students chose to participate in the annual Washington Trip. This trip is long standing tradition at LCS and offers students an amazing opportunity to walk in the footsteps of history and engage in the politics of today. The group enjoyed a mix of activities that were both educational and fun. Taking a guided tour of the Civil War battleground in Gettysburg brought history to life in the most amazing way. The chance to walk the halls of the US Capitol put students in the centre of political activity, exploring the Smithsonian's many museums offered the chance to explore space, sculpture, fine art, American history, media and more. An extra special highlight came with a performance of the award winning musical Anastasia in the famed Opera House at the Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts. The performance was a highlight of the trip for many students and the group even enjoyed dressing in their finest for the evening. Students were once again privileged to participate in the Veteran's Day ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery. This moving ceremony included performances by military bands and choirs as well as impactful speeches by high ranking military officials. While at Arlington National Cemetery, students also visited the grave site of John F Kennedy and the home of Robert E Lee. Downtime on the trip saw students enjoy shopping, dining in historic Georgetown, time relaxing with friends and a group dinner at the famed Hard Rock Cafe. Whether it was taking in the beauty of Washington's many memorials and monuments or gathering in front of the White House with friends, photo opportunities were plentiful and whether caught on film or in simple in the minds of the participants, the memories of the trip will last forever.
