Local Stewardship in Action

By Libby Dalrymple

Through their Leadership, Character, Values Program (LCV) exploration of Stewardship, the Grade 10 students have been seeking ways to care, connect and contribute to their local community. The Lakefield Santa Claus Parade presented the perfect opportunity to do all of these things. The planning started during the October Intersession Day. Everyone was involved in a brainstorming process and from that, the theme of the gingerbread house emerged. A committee of students came together to figure out the details and create an action plan. The expectation was that everyone would contribute in some way: constructing the gingerbread house, making candy decorations, assembling the float, playing music, sitting and singing on the float, walking and handing out treats (LCS tattoos and red and green M & Ms), or clean-up.

During the November 16 Intersession Day we held a work bee for everyone to collaborate and get creative with making all of the pieces. On Sunday morning, a dedicated, early-morning crew assembled the float and another group of talented musicians came together to rehearse. The students contributed their time and talents in many different ways. They also learned a lot along the way, thanks to the mentorship of staff members Ms. Saunders, Ms. Zavitz, Mr. Fleming and Mr. McMahon who generously volunteered their time and shared their construction and art skills. They are grateful to the Facilities Staff: Ray Carlow who loaned them a hay wagon, Brian McCaw who drove the truck and Mike Grant who helped with construction.

The last time LCS was involved in the Lakefield Santa Claus parade was 20 years ago. The students’ contribution was warmly received and appreciated by the community as they traveled the parade route, spreading joy to spectators. Their efforts and energy were recognized by the parade judges who awarded them second prize in the non-commercial float category! The prize was $50 from the parade organizers, the Lakefield Lions Service Club. The Grade 10 class decided to donate the money back to the Lions Club to be put toward their many community projects.

It was energizing to be part of a positive project that gave the Grade 10s an opportunity to engage in authentic learning that took them outdoors and into the community. They should be proud of how they rose to the challenge, worked together, and started a new tradition!
