Ms. Brown's Grade 12 English Class Redefines Harkness Discussions

Ms. Brown’s Grade 12 English class recently embarked on an innovative approach to Harkness discussions, exploring new ways to provide and receive feedback. Traditionally, students would annotate each other's essays with pens and highlighters, but this time, they embraced a more collaborative and introspective method.

In the modified protocol, students engaged in a Harkness Peer Review of their paper drafts for the culminating task essays. Instead of simply annotating, the writers actively listened to the feedback while jotting down their understanding on a copy of their essay. Peers in the group listened attentively, comparing the feedback to their own work.

To facilitate this transformative process, mini-Harkness discussion groups were formed and writers actively listened and took notes, gaining insights to enhance their analysis and writing skills. Through this collaborative feedback process, students developed a deeper understanding of their work and analytical abilities.

Ms. Brown's class embraced the challenge of this alternative Harkness approach, promoting collaboration, active listening, and personal growth. By redefining the feedback process, the class gained valuable skills that will serve them beyond the classroom, fostering their ability to provide thoughtful and constructive feedback while nurturing their own writing.
