1st Boys’ Hockey
Coaches: Clark Davis, Sean Munoz
The 1st Boys’ Hockey team entered the St. Peter's Hockey Tournament in Peterborough this week in preparation for the second half of the regular season. Their first game was an early-morning tilt at the Evinrude Center against Holy Cross. A back-and-forth affair, LCS managed to notch goals from Mike Hudson, Joe Gennaro, Wil Brawn and Adrien Mindjimba, who finished with 2 points overall - going down 5 - 4.
The second game took place at the Memorial Centre against Archbishop Denis O'Connor Catholic High School of Ajax. Scott Murphy provided phenomenal goaltending during a very close affair for most of the game. However, the opposition managed to score two quick goals with less than two minutes left in regulation - final score 2 - 0.
The third game took place at the Ennismore Community Centre against a very skilled East Northumberland Secondary School squad where the LCS boys saved their best game for last. With the 2nd period reaching its halfway point, Alex Babineau scored on a great shot crossing the high slot after being set up in the neutral zone by Taylor Walsh and Quinn MacMillan. Neven Ferguson also provided solid goaltending between the pipes - final score NCSS 2, Lakefield 1. The LCS boys will resume regular season play against Trinity College School this Saturday in Port Hope.
Jr. Boys’ Hockey
Coaches: Ian Armstrong, Jeff Mills
After only one practice after the long break, Lakefield College School's Jr. Boys' Hockey Team travelled to Villanova College. Villanova opened the scoring early on the power play, but the boys in red and green responded with two goals, one each from Mitchell Stedman and Brendan Rutherford, while captain and goaltender Jack Campbell stayed strong between the pipes.
Villanova scored two more goals in the second period, but Mason Schweer, on a great effort, scored late to put LCS within one, heading into the third period. Playing their best period of hockey of the season, the LCS boys out-chanced and out shot Villanova, including hitting two posts, but with an empty net for an extra attacker, could not find the back of the net. As a result, LCS lost 4 - 3, but coaches Mills and Armstrong were very pleased with the boys' work ethic and performance.
1st Girls’ Hockey
Coaches: Zach Barr, Jessica Reaume
The LCS 1st Girls’ Hockey team played in a tournament at York University, and had a successful day of development and building. In their first game against Port Credit Secondary School, the LCS Terrapins battled hard against an experienced team with a solid goaltender. Out shooting Port Credit throughout the course of the game, LCS showed they were determined to be successful on the day. Unfortunately LCS lost their first game by a score of 3 - 0.
In their 11:00 game, the girls came out with a head of steam with hopes of having a better outcome than the first game. They fell behind 2 goals to St. Theresa of Lisieux Catholic High School early in the game, but through heavy determination and drive they girls were able to score two late goals to tie the game and force a final score of 2 - 2.
In the third game of the day, the LCS girls felt a sense of momentum and improvement, and it showed as the girls came out with a certain fire and spark. Out-shooting Christ the King Catholic Secondary School, LCS put on tremendous pressure throughout the duration of the game, and controlled the puck in the offensive zone. With their efforts, LCS was able to get their first win of the season registering a score of 4 - 1.
Overall, the day was filled with improvement, smiles, and laughter. The girls of LCS hockey were fantastic ambassadors for the school and made the coaching staff, and parent community, proud.
1st Girls’ Volleyball
Coaches: Tina St. John, Leslie Schumacher, Natasha Turner, Colin Simpson
The 1st Girls' Volleyball team played their first home game of the season. Moving to division 1 this year has forced the girls to practice harder than ever before. They were ready and determined to fight hard for the win.
The girls played well throughout their first the first set but came short 25 - 22. There were some strong attacks from Madi Stillman, and great movement and communication throughout the team. In the second set the girls were down and frustrated. Though they were able to get their connection by the end of the game it was too late to catch St. Mildred's and they lost 25 - 10. Throughout the final game the girls worked together to get a lead on SMLS. With some exceptional serving from Lexi Krocker and some great offensive placements from Rachel Thomson the girls kept the game very close until the very end. They lost the final game 25 - 17.
As the first home game in a new division the senior girls played very well and have a strong sense of what they need to do to earn their next win. Great job girls!
1st Snowboard Racing
Coaches: Garret Hart, Rebecca Calder, Mary Elizabeth Konrad
The 1st Snowboard Racing team had a great two-day training session at Horseshoe Valley Resort this week. The conditions were good - warm and blue skies for both days and as it was pretty quiet, they were able to get a lot of time in on the runs, working with the instructors to learn new skills and get ready for next week's first challenge. Jake led some fantastic drills for the rest of the team and we were able to see significant improvements in all snowboarders. Well done everyone - a great first training session and best of luck next week!
