1st Track and Field
Coaches: Clark Davis, Paige Frigault
The 1st Track and Field team had a successful two days at the CISAA meet in Oshawa on May 12 and 13.  Despite two very early mornings, several athletes managed to qualify for the Metro Finals at the end of the month.  Lizzy McLean finished 1st overall in the Senior Girls High Jump with a winning height of 1.35m and 2nd overall in the Discus Throw (20.07).  Sequoia Richards finished 3rd in the Senior Girls 200m (28.01) and 4th in the Discus Throw (18.01), while Sophie Welch dominated the Junior Girls events - finishing 1st overall in the 400m (1:05.81), 2nd overall in the 100m (14.00), and 4th in the 800m (2:39.57).  Janelle Lawes also had a strong day in the Midget Girls sprint events - finishing 1st overall in the 200m (27.54) and 2nd in the 100m (13.54).  Coaches expectations were exceeded in the Senior Girls 4x100m Relay - Janelle Lawes, Sophie Welch, Sequoia Richards and anchor Caitlin Lovick managed to finish 2nd overall with a final time of 53.80.  The same group also managed to finish 3rd overall in the 4x400m Open Girls Relay (4:33.94).

On the boys side, Cameron Maltman concluded his LCS track career with a gritty, character-building 8th place finish in the pouring rain in the Senior Boys 3000m (11:30.63).  Wil Brawn also finished 4th place in the Senior Boys 800m (2:11.03), while Stu Gerus had a great day in the Junior Boys High Jump (1.55) - finishing 4th overall.  Lakefield will now look to prepare for the upcoming Metro Finals meet at Birchmount Stadium on May 25 and 26.

1st Boys’ Rugby
Coaches: Peter Andras, Zach Barr, Travis Fuchs
On May 18, the 1st Boys’ Rugby Team (A side) took to the field for their final tournament of the regular season. The boys improved on their 8-1 record, topping Ridley College (20-0), Hillfield Strathallan (30-0), and Royal St. George’s College (45-0) to finish 11-1 on the season and first place in our division.

After scoring 100 points to 0 this week, the boys are looking forward to a smart rest over the long weekend. LCS will host the championship tournament on Wednesday, May 25th. We hope to see you in the crowd cheering on boys as they seek the championship title.

1st Girls’ Soccer
Coaches: Janice Runza, Rebecca Calder
On Saturday, May 14 the 1st Girls' Soccer team travelled to Albert College, where despite some challenging weather, with cold temperatures and heavy rainfall, the girls battled hard and defeated AC 6-1.  Goal scorers were Rachel Thomson (2), Sophie Welch (2), Sequoia Richards (1) and Frederique Roy (1).

On Wednesday, May 18 the team played their last league game at home against Trinity College School.  Right from the first whistle the team dominated in possession and goal scoring, defeating TCS 7-0.  Goal scorers were Sophie Welch (2), Frederique Roy (4) and Rachel Thomson (1) with the shutout earned by Hannah Forestell.  The coaches were incredibly proud of the team for playing with class and showing good sportsmanship as they were clearly dominating the other team, but rather than 'going for the goal' whenever they had possession they worked on other aspects of the game in the second half.

The 1st Girls' Soccer Team is undefeated in regular season play, finishing in first play, and will face The York School in the semi-finals at home on Wednesday May 25, 2016.

Jr. Boys’ Tennis
Coaches: Sarah Thompson, Sam Wilson, Katrina Brennan, Derek Doucet
The Jr. Boys’ Tennis team faced off against Appleby College and St. Michael's College School at the Mayfair East in Toronto this week. These were both extremely important matches for both teams because they needed to win both in order to qualify for the CISAA Championships. Our boys arrived anxious to get on the court and claim victory!

Our first games were against St. Mike's who are often a very challenging opponent. Our boys were consistent and tactical in their play, and we had a clean sweep winning 5-0. Special mention to our 1st Doubles, James Wootton and Pedro Zapata who had some of their best serves of the season followed up with an aggressive net game making for some very exciting tennis.

Our boys were feeling confident after their first victory; however, the matches were very heated against Appleby. Our 2nd Doubles team, Jack Zhang and Connor Foster, had a big come-back after being down in their match, but unfortunately, lost their match 5-8. After some well-fought battles, both our doubles teams had lost their matches, which meant we needed all three singles teams to win if we wanted to make the final tournament.

With Tom Kutschinski, 3rd Singles, injuring himself in his game, and Robin Anstoetz, 2nd Singles, suffering from tennis elbow, we were not looking great. However, Tom pushed past his pain and played very tactfully to pull out an 8-5 win. Next, Lukas Thomas in 1st singles won with ease at 8-1, leaving Robin with all the pressure to win his match. Fortunately, Robin played exceptionally well on top of handling the pressure of having everyone watch him, and won his match 8-3!

The team supported each other and worked very hard to get to the CISAA finals. Stay tuned for our results after the tournament next Thursday!
