Team Racing Sailing Competes

By Andrew Johnston

This past Victoria Day long weekend, six Lakefield students travelled to The Hotchkiss School in Connecticut along with Mr. Johnston and Sarah Sackville for a sailing regatta. The team included Olivia Cantelon, Clea Yates, Nicholas Ward, Sofiia Onopriienko, Luke Skinner and Charlize Avon. It was a long weekend of good sailing, fun times and cool bucket hats.

The team began their adventure on Friday morning, driving to Connecticut for the sailing regatta. The team sang karaoke, watched movies, took naps and ate a lot of snacks on the eight hour journey. On the first night everyone went to a Mexican restaurant for dinner which was enjoyed by all. After dinner the team drove around Hotchkiss’ campus. The campus was beautiful, complete with a golf course. Once we returned to the hotel, we went for a walk around the resort since we had been cooped up in the van all day. After we got back to the hotel the team had quick sailing brief about team racing tactics before calling it a night.

Then...Saturday was race day! When we arrived at Hotchkiss, the wind was gusting 10 knots and there were white caps on the lake. The team got off to a bit of a rough start, but steadily improved as the day went on. Within less than five minutes of being on the water Nick and Sofia capsized their boat going downwind, but managed to get it back up before first gun.

Coach Sarah Sackville and Mr. Johnston were extremely proud of how the team did given the team’s overall lack of team racing experience. The team did really well against some of the more novice teams and ended up placing third overall at the event. Clea Yates was the team’s MVP for the regatta. She showed great leadership both on and off of the water. Luke Skinner was the recipient of the Most Improved Sailor award for the team. His sailing skills have dramatically improved since the start of the season. He and Charlize Avon even won one of the starts at the regatta. The event was a great opportunity and learning experience for the entire team! That night the team got celebratory ice cream from Dairy Queen and went to a movie.

On Sunday, the team got up early for a full day of fun. We went Go Karting in the morning and Nick Ward was the clear Go Karting Champion out of everyone. Let’s just say that most of the team’s sailing skills are a lot better than their go cart driving skills.  After Go Karting, we went to an indoor trampoline park where we were all at least three feet taller than everyone else there. That night we drove to Nick Ward’s house where his family hosted us for a BBQ. Everyone was in the pool for hours and we all had an awesome time!

Everyone on the team had an awesome weekend full of sailing and bonding!
