Bark Lake Leadership Retreat: Preparing for Global Learning

This past weekend an intrepid group of Lakefield students and staff took their first step towards the adventure that awaits them over the March Break and made their way to Bark Lake Leadership Camp for two days of immersive thinking about what it truly means to be a world traveller. Some of us, the travel credit Drama trip bound for the theatre district of London, UK and the Biology trip headed to safari through the rugged South African landscape, have been preparing for these trips since September. While others, a small group headed to the rural mountains and farmers’ fields of Guatemala, took the opportunity to fully immerse ourselves and find ourselves within our group. Mr. Rollwagen and Mrs. Boomgaardt had thoughtfully prepared workshops and activities to help provide us with perspective as we embark on our respective journeys.
The cold (-36C) temperatures could not deter us all from taking full advantage of the opportunity to learn about who we are and what we bring to a new culture. Through thought-provoking activities and careful conversations (and lots of laughter), we unpacked how our privileges and our mindset can impact our collective experiences. No matter where we are from or where we are headed, moments and memories were shared at Bark Lake that we will call on as we embark on our collective journeys in March, and beyond.

The LCS Global Learning program provides students with a wide range of meaningful, international opportunities. These opportunities include grade 10 exchanges, global learning March Break trips, adventure/expedition programs, and Round Square Conferences and language exchanges.
