Building Bridges

By Diane Rogers

The Grade 9 students spent the afternoon of November 18 with Nancy Thomson from “Think Outside.” In the first session, students were tasked with making a bridge in teams of six. Bridges were judged on creativity, strength and symmetry. The challenge was that each team was further split into groups of three with each group building only half of the bridge. Time was given periodically for them to share their plan and ideas orally but they could not see the other half until the end when they were given one piece of duct tape to connect the halves together.

In the second session, Nancy facilitated a workshop that was originally created by Jalynn Bosley from ALIVE Outdoors. The workshop is based on the research of Dr. Martin Seligman who is the founder of Positive Psychology. Students were given the opportunity to reflect and share one of their personal strengths, how they live it, and how LCS benefits from this.
