The Science of Anxiety and Stress

By Carrie Gilfillan

On Monday, May 7, the Grade 10 and 11 Learning Strategies students went on an adventure to the Toronto Science Center to participate in The Science of Anxiety and Stress presentation. Students had the opportunity to explore how the brain reacts to situations and our body's response to perceived danger. Pedro ’18 was selected to do a hands-on demonstration of a brain dissection on stage and Adrienne ’20 was a participant in the brain games demonstration.

The group then spent the afternoon at Haute Goat in Port Hope feeding alpacas, walking the fields with a large trip of goats, and smurgling with the goats in their play area. The goat farm was an exercise in stress relief and the mental health benefits of connecting with nature, and of course, provided the group with many laughs and goat cuddles. We were privileged to spend time with the newest tripping billies members who were just two weeks old. While we were there, Haute Goat welcomed some new members to their goat family, and although we didn't get to see the live birth we did suggest a few names for the new goats. We are happy to announce that one of the newest tripping billies is named Grover.
