Cross Country Running

By Mr. Rory Gilfillan

Like everyone who wears the Lakefield College School colours, athletes on the cross country running (XC) team, are students of the sport but just beneath the surface, competitors who pursue speed over distance are students of endurance. Distance running isn’t always measured in speed and success in the sport is as much about what you are willing to suffer as it is about reaching the podium.

But sometimes if an athlete trains hard enough, desire, pain and success become the same thing.

On Wednesday September 25, 2019, Thomas Larson crossed the finish line in the Junior Boys Race at Dagmar Ski Resort, fifteen seconds ahead of the field. Not only was this a commanding win but the first LCS race win in at least the last twenty years.

Thomas’ win was no more an accident than team Captain Anna Harris’ fifth-place finish in the Senior Girls event later that day; both Harris and Larson spent the summer training.

In most sports acquiring the limelight and building a reputation for excellence is as much a part of the sport as wins, losses, assists and goals. But cross country running is different here too and in the finish corral, Larson was paid the rarest of compliments by a competing runner, a compliment that could have been applied to many LCS runners that day: “Who the hell was that guy?”

1st Boys' Soccer

By Ms. Janice Runza

The LCS 1st Boys' Soccer team has given a solid performance this past week. After a tough 4-1 loss against Bayview Glen School on September 25, 2019, the team battled back and defeated Crestwood Prep 4-1 on Fall Fair Day, September 28, 2019, in front of an encouraging and supportive crowd. Goal scorers included S. Ramirez (2), J. Freeman, and J. Carravaggio.

With only one practice in between, the team faced a challenging opponent in Toronto French School on October 1, 2019. The team was down 2-1 when a weather delay was called. Following a 30-minute wait, the team knew that they would have to come out strong in case another delay was called. After only a few minutes the team tied the game 2-2. Shortly after the team's momentum continued to grow, resulting in a final score of 5-3 for LCS. Goal Scores were R. Caines (2), P. Prindiville Porto, J. Freeman, and M. Briscoe.

The following day, October 2, 2019, the team hopped on a bus and were ready to face RSGC at Cherry Beach Park. Despite some fatigue and muscle soreness, LCS was a force to be reckoned with, right from the starting whistle. The team battled in wet, cool conditions, but stayed positive, taking the win with a 4-0 score. Shut-out goes to M. Hepburn. Goal scorers were A. Maltman, P. Runza, J. Freeman, and P. Prindiville Porto.

It's been an incredibly busy week for this team, but the players are up for the challenge as they face UCC on October 5, 2019. Good luck boys!
