Inspiring Young Leaders

Lakefield has the aspirational goal of becoming a school known and recognized for our commitment to student voice. Our vision, to “inspire teenagers to become leaders who care, connect and contribute,” drives our strategy and we continually seek ways to reinforce that students are key players in the process of change and that education about the school-decision making process is fundamental to the Lakefield experience.

One of the ways we strive to empower our students is through participation in elected leadership roles. In Chapel, today, our new community-elected student Grade Representatives (Grades 9-11) were announced. Coached by LCS staff and our Co-Head Students Maddy McGowan ‘20 and Santiago Paz ‘20, this group of leaders will participate in a retreat designed to build their confidence and understanding of their new role as representatives of their Grade. The Grade Reps will work through facilitated discussions and debriefs with the other students to discover how, as a team, they might purposefully engage with the school community throughout the year. The ultimate goal of their first orientation to leadership will be to leave our Grade Reps feeling connected and looking forward to the development opportunities their new role will provide throughout the year..

Congratulations to our LCS student Grade representatives this year who include:

Grade 9: Isabelle Kim, Abigail Reeds, Evan Armstrong and Griffin Mbonda
Grade 10: Kate Bemrose, Pia Garcia Muriel Lavalle, Sarah Jiang, David Crispo and Jesse Zhang
Grade 11: Catherine Kim, Valentina Boren, Gavin Plunkett and Jeewoo Lee

To be considered for a Grade Representative position students must be able to:
  • Live the LCS Mission and help to uphold our seven community values
  • Be involved in the Duke of Edinburgh Award program
  • Attend all school day events and a large number of spirit events (after hours)
  • Be involved with Lakefield Environmental Action Force (LEAF) - Earth Day preparations - and Safe Spaces clubs

Responsibilities of Grade Representatives include:
  • Augment the grade rep profile within their own grade so that they are approachable and seen as a resource for their peers
  • On the “Food Services” committee
  • They are part of the standards process
  • Serve as a group that can work with the Leadership Team of LCS and staff regarding ideas, issues, strategy for community, or concerns
  • They support the “Chronicle” team
  • Term “Focus Event” (eg Christmas Party for the Grade 11s)
  • Run Minor Spirit Event
  • As a group, define their unique goals for the year, implement a plan, and follow through on their own initiatives as defined by their goals/dreams.Assist with conferences or other events being hosted by LCS
  • Attend at least one leadership retreat in the fall and one in the late winter
