Surviving in the Elements | Quinzhee Hut Building

The cold weather was no feat for Ms. Connelly’s Grade 11 Healthy Living and Outdoor Activities class. After arriving on campus this Tuesday, the class braved the chilly temperatures to build quinzhee huts in the grove. Quinzhee huts are snow shelters made from large piles of loose snow that are shaped then hollowed. Faster to build than igloos, quinzhees can be constructed to block drifting snow and wind, keeping campers safe in the elements. Through building these huts, our students learned how to stay warm when camping outdoors in the winter and how to survive on cold weather expeditions.
