Exploring Local and Global Issues with Our Grade 9 Students

Students in our Grade 9 Integrated course (Geography, English, and OE) culminated the fourth Mod of the school year with a series of presentations given to their peers and teachers. The class explored how their relationship to the place in which they live can be used to help them become their healthiest selves. They also considered how global issues impact the local community.

Through the lens of these overarching questions, our students explored issues connected to the UN Sustainability Goals, examining topics that ranged from “The Impacts of the Pandemic on the Vietnam Economy,” to “The Pandemic’s Effect on the Mental Health of Teenagers in North America,” to “Effects of Ocean Plastic Pollution in the United Kingdom,” and more.

“The students applied previous knowledge from the earlier Geography Mods about spatial significance and geographic perspectives and creating good inquiry questions and combined it with new information about media bias, perspective in writing, The UN Sustainable Development Goals, and presentation skills to explore a global issue they were passionate about. They used an online program (ArcGIS Online) to create a map then an accompanying StoryMap to visually display their information and present it to their peers/staff.” - Ms. Ross (Outdoor Education Coordinator and Outdoor Education Teacher)

It was incredible to see our Grade 9 students employ their critical thinking skills to read and debate using persuasive techniques. Their hard work resulted in compelling presentations that wowed their audiences. Well done, Grade 9s!
