Learning the Art of Gumboot Dancing

Our Dance classes were treated to a special dance lesson with Isaac Eshikaty, our Technical Solutions Analyst. Isaac shared the art of African gumboot dancing, which originated in the goldmines of South Africa in the apartheid era. The African gumboot dance was performed by miners under slavery to communicate with each other as they worked. Over time, this art form evolved into a celebratory and jovial dance.

This style of dance is percussive, rhythmic, and our students couldn’t help but smile as they worked to maintain the group’s synchronization.

“I feel honoured that I’ve been able to share this for over 14 years with our Lakefield students. I don’t think anyone sits through a gumboot dance and doesn’t have a sense of awe.”

Thank you, Isaac, for sharing this art form with our students!
