LCS Students Represent Nations Around the World in Model UN

Written by: Tom Milburn

This past weekend, members of the LCS Model United Nations club represented the school at the Ontario Model United Nations (OMUN), hosted by Upper Canada College. It was the first two-day event this year that the club has been able to participate in and our students were thrilled to have the opportunity.

Delegates in the Model UN represent the positions of different countries, as if they were delegates at the actual UN, serving on committees that discuss various issues. This year, LCS delegates represented Norway and the United Arab Emirates and they dealt with several issues at the UN Security Council, including the Israeli/Palestinian conflict and the Turkish/Kurdish conflicts. Other committees included a discussion of cryptocurrency regulation, sustainable urban sprawl issues, and difficulties with cybercrime and the dark web. One student also took part in a "crisis committee," which simulates ongoing developments in various historical or contemporary situations, in this case, The Fall of the Mongolian Empire.

It was a successful weekend for all delegates, and our returning students really look forward to getting back to in-person conferences in the 2022/23 school year!
