Walking Around the World

By Jen Horrigan

With the first ever Lakefield International Film Festival entertaining students last Friday evening, a very successful series of global themed events and activities drew to a close. The two weeks of global themed events kicked off on April 23 with the annual Walk Around the World lunch.

Walk Around the World began just over ten years ago students from a small number of countries sharing information and a few treats from their homelands. In no time at all, it has grown to a cultural extravaganza with 25 countries represented.

In order to make Walk Around the World a huge success, students and staff devoted time in their busy schedules to research recipes, make ingredients lists, prepare, cook and serve food to the entire school community.  Every participant was eager to offer an authentic culinary experience and they set to work on sharing their favourite traditional foods. Enthusiasm is always high at the beginning of an event but their dedication was the key to success as our young "chefs" quickly realized that preparing food for an entire school can be stressful and frustrating - but so fun and rewarding.

After 15 trips to local grocery stores and markets and 10 hours logged in various kitchens around campus and the local community, the creations were ready to be enjoyed. When the booths were set up in Upper Hadden Hall, the smell was amazing and the spirits high. Music poured from speakers and with flags and traditional dress adorned by the participants, it was a lively and colourful affair.

Eager students and staff lined up to "walk around the world" over their lunch hour.  No one would go hungry trying samosas from India, sushi from Japan, puff puff from Nigeria, mac pie from Barbados, mac and cheese from Bahamas, mapo tofu from China, kimchi pancakes from Korea, baklava from Turkey, currywurst from Germany, ugali from Kenya, beef patties from Jamaica, chilaquiles from Mexico and so many other delicious items from the countries represented here at LCS.

There is no other day quite like Walk Around the World.  The preparations are endless, the set up chaotic but the energy, excitement and delicious food tops it all.  To have a day that celebrates cultures from around the world and learn from each other is a wonderful privilege that.  It is amazing to reflect on the fact that from 37 countries, we have all come to find ourselves on one campus in Canada. We bring with us our heritage, traditions, etiquette, food, music and other interests. Somethings may be different between countries and we honour our differences but events like Walk Around the World shows us that when you bringing together food, music, enthusiasm and friendship, the celebration is spectacular.
