Spring Fun Day

By Nicole Liu ’21

Early in the afternoon of Saturday, May 11, a group of twenty Grade 10 students greeted a group of young kids ranging in ages 4 to 13 from the Big Brothers Big Sisters program in Peterborough with big smiles.  We were all excited to welcome the 50 people, including the children, their “big” brothers and sisters, and parents. The BBBS Spring Fun Day has been an event that we have been planning for weeks.  The hope was to give these children a day of relaxation and fun on Lakefield’s beautiful campus.

We divided into four stations: disc golf, low ropes, a scavenger hunt and make-your- own ice cream sundaes! The guests, who were divided into four groups according to paper house colours, rotated around these four stations. As a leader of the Green group, I saw young kids yell out in joy when they completed the ropes courses or when they tried the boxing pads that an LCS student brought out.

We wound down the day with a delicious summer treat and the group shared stories about their families, friends and their school. It was only then that we realized what these kids go through on a daily basis. A day that originally was meant as a gift for them turned out to be a day of inspiration for us.  They showed us the perseverance and resilience to not let the past define how you live life in the present.
