Publishing our Writers and Artists

By Lorraine Brown

When there was at least one student volunteer every day in Chapel during the month of April to share their "Poem of the Day," I knew that the literary life of LCS was brimming with creativity and a desire to share their love of literature. Although students were a bit slow to submit to the annual LCS Writes! contest, I was flooded with submissions within the final 48 hours before the deadline.

I received 61 submissions in total. The 15 judges really struggled to narrow it down to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for each category.

The winners of the contest were announced in Chapel the day before Regatta Day, May 25. Their pieces have been published in the In A Grove: Integrated Arts Journal. In addition to the 21 writers featured in the journal, there are also 26 artists featured.

Copies of In A Grove are still available in front of the art room, and will be available at Closing. Winners of the contest received Chapters gift certificates, courtesy of the generous sponsorship of this contest by the Grove Society.

I want to thank all of the students who submitted their work to the contest; you took a creative risk to showcase your work. Keep writing and keep submitting! Thank you to the fifteen judges for their expertise and their time. Thank you to Simon Spivey for taking the photos of the beautiful artwork. Thank you to Ms. Zavitz and Ms. McElwain for encouraging our artists and for all of the staff who supported the writers in their submissions. Thank you to Stephanie Wilcox for designing and coordinating the printing of the beautiful journal.

I encourage everyone to pick up a copy of the journal and make time to read, reflect, and gaze upon the artistry of our students. You will be inspired to create your own form of art.
