Cross Country Running

Distance running is hard but sometimes it’s agony.  For Gabriela Shooli-Cassab, who twisted her ankle in the last kilometer of the CISAA Cross Country Championships, finishing the race mattered more than the pain. For LCS it was a race of notable achievements. It wasn’t just that three athletes qualified to go to OFSAA, it was the commanding way in which they did it:

Evan Armstrong:  2nd overall Novice Boys
Anna Harris: 6th overall Senior Girls
Thomas Larson:  3rd overall Junior Boys.

Mentioned in Dispatches:
  • Keegan Sayles’ understanding that creating a team isn’t about what you say but what you do. Sayles’ no-frills work ethic may not have always won the race but it did create a team that people wanted to be on and coaches wanted to coach. There is no higher praise.
  • Rookie, Amrit Garcha, bringing his homework to complete before and after the race, reminding me that there is always time for the things that matter and being an athlete does not preclude being an academic and in fact, Lakefield College is built on this very premise.
  • Ilana Mohamed: Ilana is our metronome and with a long enough race, Ilana wins. Ilana doesn’t stop.
  • The vast improvement and exuberance of Wellesley Yu who wrote a calculus test before the race, and got his mother to get him to the race. Wellesley had a great reason not to run but ran anyway.
  • Russ Gordon literally standing on the line, keeping space for our runners before the start.
  • Todd Harris because, Todd Harris.

1st Boys' Soccer

Although it was disappointing to have our final regular season game cancelled on Wednesday due to a forfeit by the opposing team, due to unforeseen circumstances, we want to congratulate the 1st Boys' Soccer Team for officially finishing 1st in the East after regular season play. As a result the team gets a 'BYE' on Monday and will play AT HOME in the 1/4 final match on Wednesday, October 30, 2019 (opponent not yet known). If the team can pull away with a win in the 1/4 finals, and the coaches know the boys are capable of doing so, we'll then move to 'Final 4' on Friday, November 1, 2019 hosted by 1st in the West (to be determined). Well done boys and good luck from your coaches, Janice Runza, Elliot Exton and Stephanie Sparkman
