Beekeeping at our Apiary

By Mr. Garret Hart

On Sunday, September 27, students and staff gathered together as we harvested the honey from the school's apiary.  We now have 12 hives (eight on-campus and four at the Northcote farm) that we use as part of our programming, allowing students to see first hand how these fascinating creatures live and work. Simply seeing several thousand bees buzzing around the hives is quite thrilling for some students! With protective suits and gloves on, the students are able to help us remove the excess honey from the hives and do a final check to make sure all the hives are healthy and filled with enough resources (honey and pollen) to enable them to survive the winter months.

Everything looked great during our hive inspections and we were able to harvest nearly 250 pounds of honey this year!  The honey will be packaged and sold in school stores.  All proceeds go to support the student programming at the school.
