Vincent Cloutier ’22 Wins the Audrey Wearn Prize

Congratulations to Vincent Cloutier ’22 who won $10,000 in the Audrey Wearn Language Prize! The funds Vincent won will be used to help solve the language-based problem he identified earlier this year.

Vincent was inspired to enter the competition by those he worked with in Quebec. “Over the summer, I worked with COVID-positive patients in a severely understaffed hospice home in Montreal and an Indigenous man named Charlie Papak who struggled quite a bit with the disease inspired me.”

Vincent volunteers in a retirement home in Quebec where many residents are elders from Cree First Nation reserves. These individuals often experience a language barrier upon arriving at their new home. Vincent recognizes the need for clear communication in this setting, particularly when the administration of medication is involved. He also believes that communication plays a large role in helping residents feel comfortable in their new setting. Vincent plans to create an app that will allow for translations from Indigenous languages to French and vice versa in order to ensure a higher quality of life for residents in retirement facilities.

We asked Vincent how it felt to win the competition and he said, “It felt great! They delayed the announcement...I thought I lost, then they just dropped it on me casually.”

When we asked about his next steps, Vincent shared that he’d be connecting with convenors from the Audrey Wearn Language Prize to further develop his idea, and work on next steps with the ultimate goal of active translation.

Congratulations, Vincent on this huge success!
