After a two-year sabbatical from live performances (due to the pandemic) our community is eager to see the latest production from students in the LCS Musical Theatre co-curricular program.
Students have been preparing for their upcoming performances of Anything Goes! for months. Working through the ongoing changes to public health and safety policies, the cast and crew have been nimble in adapting their preparation and rehearsals as required. Mr. Bemrose shared that over 50 staff and students have been working (in-person and remotely) since November to pull this musical together.
With their performances just weeks away, the cast and crew are bubbling with excitement to share their hard work with our community in a comical performance of Anything Goes! We stopped by their latest rehearsal in the Bryan Jones Theatre to ask students about their experiences preparing for the show.
Alex ’24 addressed the challenges of preparing for a show during the pandemic, “The uncertainty with COVID is definitely one of the challenges. But, the most fun part is that we’re still trucking along and still trying to get it out there. I’m excited for people to have something to watch, especially after live production hasn’t been able to be on for about two years now.”
When asked to describe the show in a few sentences, Sarah ’22 said, “The plot of Anything Goes! is that we’re all on a ship and it’s kind of set in the 1930s and we see a lot of love triangles arise as we’re on the ship.” Jay ’22 added, “It’s chaotic, it’s all over the place, but in a fun way.”
Sarah ’22 talked about the unique challenge of preparing for the show both remotely and in person saying, “I think what’s most difficult has been having to switch to online rehearsals but the staff have made this such a smooth process. Everything has been going well.” Sunaina ’22 added, “It’s been really cool seeing it all come together. When it started, we were all really rough, especially trying to do this in a pandemic. Seeing all of the incredible dance numbers come together, all of the singing, it’s been really amazing.”
At a time when a musical theatre production is difficult to plan and rehearse for, students maintained their motivation. Each cast member we spoke to had a different reason for wanting to perform in the show.
“I enjoyed singing in my personal time…and I wanted an opportunity to practice building my confidence this year and I thought the musical theatre would be a great idea to combine the things I want to do and my goals together to participate in the show.” - Jay ’22
“This is my first production. I thought I would try it out. I’ve been here [at LCS] for years and it looked fun to try…I look forward to presenting it next week to the crowd!” - Ben ’22
“I haven’t done any musical theatre performances before…so I thought I should go for it in my Grad year. I love to act and so I thought, ‘Why not try something new?’” - Sunaina ’22
We look forward to seeing this show come to life on March 30, 2022, and April 2, 2022.
