Grade 12 OE Classes Communicate, Collaborate, and Connect in Crisis Management Simulation

By: Peter Andras

On Saturday, April 23, students in Mr. Andras and Mr. O’Grady’s Grade 12 Leadership in Outdoor Recreation classes (Grade 12 OE) participated in the annual Crisis Management Simulation.

The Crisis Simulation is the starting point for their Wilderness First Aid certification and it has been an integral part of the Grade 12 OE experience at LCS for over 20 years. The activity teaches students how to work together as a team and it allows them to practice their communication and collaboration skills. Combining special effects makeup, a story that involves multiple injured persons, and an amazing outdoor wooded campus, the stage has always been set for an impactful and meaningful experience.

This year, the simulation involved a small aircraft that fell and crashed in the Lakefield forest. Situated in a grove of cedar trees, the classes were divided into various roles: Incident Command (responsible for the decision-making), the Base Camp Group (responsible for patient intake and camp set-up), and Search and Rescue teams.

Once the simulation began, the Search and Rescue teams scoured the forest to find six “victims” with various injuries, ranging from a few bumps and bruises to a compound tibial fracture. Students were tasked with finding, assessing, stabilizing, and then transporting their victims back to the base camp. It became an exercise in both communication and triage as students had more victims than teams and only two spinal boards to carry people on.

The crisis scenario challenged our OE classes to problem-solve and communicate effectively in a situation that generated the real stress associated with assisting injured persons. Students were not expected to know all of the first aid treatments but rather to learn about communication and patient assessment strategies.

In the coming weeks, students will gain more confidence in their patient assessment and treatment strategies while working through the Wilderness First Aid material. We look forward to seeing them rise to the challenge of learning this new information and practicing their skills.
