Learning the Art of Leadership | 2022 Grad Conference

A large part of living and learning at Lakefield College School means embracing traditions that preceding students have enjoyed for decades. The final year at LCS is particularly rich with tradition as students aim to soak up every last bit of the Lakefield experience.

One of these time-honoured customs involves our Grade 12 students participating in a leadership conference upon their arrival to The Grove. The Grade 12 Leadership Conference offers them a chance to spend time together as a grade, and with faculty and staff, before their younger peers arrive.

Every year, the key goals for the conference remain constant:
  • Helping Grads feel settled and at home
  • Ensure LCS Grads are comfortable with their leadership roles and concepts, such as shared leadership
  • Providing time to think critically about what it will take for this year’s graduating class to inspire student engagement and what they can do to encourage excitement among their peers while looking forward to the year ahead
As a part of this year’s conference, our Grads participated in a series of activities that focussed on community, empathy, listening, teamwork, trust, fun, and joy. Some of the activity topics included:
  • Chapel Talks (a Grade 12 tradition)
  • Fostering a Welcoming Environment
  • How Do We Frame Our Grad Leadership?
  • Culture of Consent and Care
“Our goal is to enable each of our students to develop their individual potential as self-confident and ethical leaders who are active and engaged citizens in all aspects of their lives and who are positioned to make a positive difference in whatever endeavours they choose to pursue in the future.” Peter O’Grady, Director of Student Leadership

During the Grad Conference, our Grade 12 students also had the chance to learn more about our Senior Student Leadership Model. This model is unique to LCS and allows every member of the graduating class the opportunity to assume a position of responsibility and to participate in the decision-making process for events, programs, and activities that will affect the entire student body.

Our 2022/23 Co-Head students were nominated earlier this year and in the coming weeks, students will accept SIC roles in a range of areas, such as Guidance and Academics, Outdoor Education, Admissions, Development, and Communications.

We look forward to seeing how our students settle into their leadership roles this year.
