Exploring Student Care

Intersession Day on March 2 included an informative, fun and engaging conference for Grade 10, 11 and 12 students.  The afternoon started with a keynote speaker, and students made choices about which of 18 different sessions to attend.

Our keynote speaker Dr. Revel (of Peterborough Sexual Health Clinic, Trent University Health Service and Family Health Practise) was entertaining and enlightening. Known for her blunt clear talk, Dr. Revel’s care and passion for student care was clear. The afternoon began with a message around consent, what is sex and taking care of oneself. Students were able to join Dr. Revel (and her medical panel) for her breakout session after the keynote, if desired.

Eighteen different speakers and wellness activities filled the rest of the afternoon’s program and were catered to diverse interests. Popular sessions included: “Social Media, Internet, and Sexual Relationships – What the Law Says!” facilitated by our community Constable Richard Nie; “All You Have Wanted To Know About Sex But Have Never Been Able To Ask” with an expert medical panel;  “Introduction to Wendo Self-Defense For Women”, “Hook-up Culture: Healthy Relationships”, “Sexual Health & Minimizing Sexism” facilitated by KSAC; “Men’s Health Forum”, “Mediation: Finding Your Still, Quiet Place Within”, broomball on the Armstrong Rink and yoga.

Students have reported back that:
… ”facilitators connected to us in the audience and related to us in high school”
… “we were a little surprised at first but the topics needed to be talked about”
… “I was really comfortable asking questions in both of my sessions”

This event was a team effort special thanks to the Intersession Committee, the LCS Health Centre staff and our many community and faculty facilitators.
