Entertaining the Kids

By Alison McElwain and Tina St. John

On March 31, the Grade 12 Drama classes performed their adaptations of Julia Donaldson’s A Gold Star for Zog, Room on the Broom and The Gruffalo for more than 400 local junior and senior kindergarten students.

This show was our students culminating task, and part of of “the Soulpepper Project.” After choosing the book they wanted to bring to life on stage, students participated in a theatre creation workshop with Paula Wing and Hailey Gillis from the Soulpepper Theatre Company.  They learned to create work using children’s games. They considered how children play make-believe and adopted that mode of play as their “style.” They created the set, the costumes and the blocking using things we found around the theatre. A dolly became a broom, a wig turned a big male student into a resourceful princess and a selection of dollar-store boas transformed five teenagers into a flock of baby dragons.

After six weeks of rehearsal we were ready. The music went on, the lights went down, the MCs emerged and the theatre-magic began.

Special thanks to Donald Ross ’48 for generously sponsoring every aspect of this program.  Thanks also to Carrie Gilfillan, Derek Doucet, Ali Webb, Danielle Labrosse, Libby Dalrymple, Debbie Buckley, Tayler Morencie, David Krocker, Cathy Maher and Borana Sarcevic.
