Laughing. Learning. Creating Community. Giving Back.

By Vicky Boomgaardt

Our Grade 10 students worked hard, got dirty, and smiled a lot during their orientation programming at The Mount Community Centre.

The Grade 10 Orientation provides an opportunity for community building as well as an introduction to, and involvement in, community service. This orientation program is intended to act as a springboard for our Grade 10 students to motivate them to become more actively involved in community service. Our goal is for students to finish orientation feeling that they are an integral part of their Grade 10 community as well as feeling that they have contributed in a meaningful way to the Peterborough and Lakefield communities. During the orientation session, the Grade 10s focussed on the Leadership, Character, Values pillar of “Stewardship,” and the Citizenship value of encouraging students to become thoughtful, constructive and contributing members of the local and global community through service to others and the development of leadership skills.

The Grade 10 students spent all day Monday and Tuesday afternoon at The Mount Community Centre in Peterborough participating in activities that created opportunities for them to get to know and reacquaint with members of their grade and begin the process of coming together as a community.  Formerly a convent, The Mount is in transition to become a local hub for housing, food security, health, arts and culture and environmental sustainability. Lakefield students contributed to the revitalization project by giving their time to clean and paint walls and move furniture and debris from areas slated to become offices for local NGOs and social service agencies. Students explored what it means to participate in community service and have the opportunity to be involved in meaningful community service at the local level. While it was hard work, Ethan Webster ’20 said that he was impressed with the amount of work that they were able to accomplish, and that “it feels good.”

In a debrief at the end of their time at The Mount, students were challenged to reflect on what they can do to enrich their own communities this year whether that be at LCS, in Lakefield, Peterborough or at home. Looking ahead, they also had the opportunity to consider how they will incorporate service into their year. During the debrief a student reflected, “I used to think community service was just about getting my hours. Now I think it’s about putting the needs of the community before our own and giving my time not my money.”
