Debating Among the Best

By Dayna Taylor
The Debating and Public Speaking Club sent three students to the International Independent School Public Speaking Competition in beautiful, snowy Winnipeg from October 27 to the 30th. This competition includes some of the top debaters and public speakers from around the world - 47 schools and 150 competitors from places such as Peru, South Africa, Scotland, Korea and India.

Grade 12 students Paras Cheema, Jack Campbell and Alice Prindiville-Porto competed in three challenging categories each, including Persuasive Speaking, Interpretive Reading, After Dinner Speaking, Cross-Examination style debate and Impromptu and Extemporaneous Speaking. Jack’s humorous speech to “the Conglomerate of Bad First Daters” had his audience in stitches, while Alice’s satirical critique of the Ontario education system received many laughs (and many knowing nods!). Paras took a more serious tone with his writing and delivered a beautiful speech regarding women’s rights. Jack and Paras also competed in debates about whether or not economic sanctions should be placed on countries who break environmental agreements. Alice performed a piece of passionate feminist poetry.

We were also fortunate enough to participate in a guided tour of the Humans Rights Museum – a truly moving, thought-provoking experience.

Our competitors conducted themselves with a truly LCS spirit: respectful of others, compassionate, and hard working. We look forward to our upcoming season of debating and public speaking. Our next competition is on November 25.
