Positively Thriving

By Heather Avery

On Tuesday, November 7, we welcomed approximately 70 parents and community members in person, and even more families and alumni via Facebook Live, to hear Ms. Libby Dalrymple, Ms. Carrie Gilfillan and Ms. Kirsten Johnston speak about "Positively Thriving: How LCS is Infusing the Science of Positive Psychology into Life and Learning at The Grove."  LCS is fortunate to have in-house expertise in this area through Dalrymple, Gilfillan and Johnston, who all earned Certificates of Applied Positive Psychology in 2016/17 funded through the THRIVE initiative.

The three speakers outlined the strong scientific case to be made for the use of positive psychology to strengthen well-being and academic performance in our students, and introduced the audience to a few basic positive psychology principles—gratitude and focusing on the positive—through games and exercises. They closed by sharing how positive psychology is being incorporated into the LCS experience—through education of staff, intersession workshops for students, Chapel presentations and infusions into the Grade 9 advising and academic curricula.  Dalyrmple, Gilfillan and Johnston will continue to use their expertise in the years to come to spread positive education principles throughout the LCS community.
