Solidarity and Support for People of Puerto Rico

By Libby Dalrymple

When Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico this September, the Grade 11 and 12 Spanish students felt the need to reach out.  They were particularly moved by an article they read about how badly the neighbourhood featured in the "Despacito" video was damaged. Recognizing that they have all enjoyed and benefited from the music of Puerto Rican artists as well as their virtual connection to the neighbourhood in the video, they felt it was important to give back to the country.

And so the idea of the "Despacito Café" was born!

The students researched charities that were doing relief work in the country and chose "Unidos por Puerto Rico" as their cause to support. The students also researched Caribbean recipes, and had a fun and intensive cooking and baking session in the OE kitchen on campus.

A few hours later, they sold their treats in their "café" and were delighted by the positive support and generosity of their peers.  They were also thrilled to learn that they raised $600 through their efforts.  As the students reflected on the experience, they commented on how good it felt to show their solidarity and support in a tangible way.  It felt good to do good!

Many thanks to Lakefield Foodland and the Bulk Barn on Lansdowne in Peterborough for their support of this initiative.
