1st Alpine Team
Coaches: Peter Andras, Laura King, Rob Fleming
The Alpine Ski team competed in their first slalom race of the season this week at Devil’s Glen. All of our athletes impressed us with their hard work paying off in some excellent results. In the school trained female division, Keely Matsusaki placed 2nd overall, and Emma Durach 4th, leading our girls' team to a second place finish. In the school trained male division, Momo Mack placed 19th, Brent Dadds 21st, Tuna Basara 22nd, and Arda Basara 24th of 50 racers.

Again impressing us with their skill in a highly competitive division, Noah Storey placed 8th of 36 racers in the Open Male division; and Averil Gougeon 14th of 32 in the Open Female division.

The team will take this slalom racing experience into our next race on Wednesday, February 7, at Craigleith Ski Club. We look forward to seeing what we will accomplish next week!

1st Girls’ Hockey
Coaches: Rory Gilfillan, April Loojie
This past Wednesday the 1st Girls’ Hockey team fell to Branksome Hall in an exhibition game at the Lakefield arena.  Despite only being down 2-0 at the end of the second period, the final score was a 6-0 loss.  However, as one student mentioned in class, "even if you don't win, you can still learn a lot" and if anything, the lessons we learn on the ice are often insignificant to the lessons we learn off it.

Hard work matters in an of itself.  Kit Wright's daily presence on the shinny rink honing her skills may not pay off with a big win or a highlight reel goal but every day and every week she gets better.

How you do anything, is how you do everything.  Grit in the corners and in the crease, tenaciously working to clear the puck, and supporting your teammates doesn't end the moment we leave the ice. Fellowship doesn't always win games but the laughter on the long bus rides home, the stops at the Whitby Hub, and the bitter cold of Douro arena are why we play.  We don't simply play for a team, we play for each other.

"The duration of an athletic contest is relatively short, while the training for it may take many months of arduous work and continuous exercise of self-effort. The real value of sport is not the actual game played in the limelight of applause, but the hours of dogged determination and self-discipline carried out alone, imposed and supervised by an exacting conscience. The applause soon dies away, the prize is left behind, but the character you build is yours forever." - Unknown

Jr. Girls’ Volleyball
Coaches: Janice Runza, Baillie Allen, Borana Sarcevic
On Wednesday January 31, the Jr. Girls' Volleyball team travelled through the blustery snowy weather to Bayview Glen in Toronto.  The LCS girls were well aware of the strength they were facing as Bayview Glen is currently in first place. From the start of the first game LCS players worked hard at finding their stride and were able to take an early lead, but then BVG battled back with some solid serving and tipping and defeated LCS 25-19.

LCS knew that a win was within reach with some minor corrections and a more tactical focus.  The girls’ 'net' game was superb, and with the added power serving from Cassie Mesburis and Charlize Avon, LCS was able to take the lead late in the game.  BVG and LCS battled back and forth, but LCS was unable to hold on and lost 25-21.

With the addition of some enthusiastic spectators (thank you to the Jr. Boys’ Basketball team!) who were able to watch the last half of the third game and provided some solid cheering, LCS' energy level was rejuvenated.  Abbey Murray, Charlize Avon and Adrienne Cross had some amazing unreturnable hits - this combined with an impressive serving streak by Cassie, LCS showed that they were not going to give up this game without a battle.  After a close back and forth game, BVG took the final point winning 30-28.  The coaches shared, “We are so proud they are of ALL the girls on the team.  BVG is a very solid team, and our girls played their hearts out.  Well done!”
