Harkness Discussions

Students in Lorraine Brown’s AP Lit class recently formed their own Harkness Table. The Harkness Method is a method of learning in which discussions are held around a table of students that contribute, question and learn from one another with minimal instruction from the teacher. Ms. Brown told her students, “It’s not about judgement. It’s about community building rather than an intellectual competition.”

The topic was complex - it involved students crafting inferential and applied questions for four pre-readings related to the theme of Marginalized Voices. Ms. Brown was very impressed with what her students were able to accomplish around the table as they demonstrated sophisticated communication skills. Some of these skills included inviting others to speak, pausing before speaking, recognizing others opinions and using a respectful tone of voice. With such an engaging process, students are being empowered to learn in a new way.
