The Power of Mindfulness

By Heather Avery

Last Tuesday, Ali Smith, Atman Smith and Andres Gonzalez, founders of the Holistic Life Foundation, visited Lakefield College School to educate all students and staff, as well as members of the local community, about the power of mindfulness and yoga practices to make a difference in student's ability to stay calm, self-regulate, and focus.

Students and faculty learned breathing techniques and meditative practices, and also had a chance to hear about the work of these men to bring hope and positive change to the lives of underserved youth in Baltimore. Ali, Atman and Andres also spent Wednesday morning in various classes, where their easy-going approach and advice about dealing with stress was well-received. One student noted,
“One of the HLF guys came in before my Physics test and it helped.  I didn’t second guess my answers. I just was able to relax and just go with it.”

Our THRIVE research suggests that practising mindfulness can help our students to flourish, and both teachers and students are looking forward to building on this foundation provided by HLF as we begin preparation for exams.

The Holistic Life Foundation presentation to our community is available online.
