On Tuesday, May 8, 2018, LCS welcomed Jack Veitch—Health Promoter and Educator with the Canadian Mental Health Association, Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge branch—as part of our Mental Health Week programming. In his first session, Jack gave a presentation on “Social Media and Mental Health—The good. The bad. The ugly.” to LCS parents, followed by two later sessions with our students.
The presentation helped us to better understand issues surrounding mental health and social media and will help us to better understand how as a school and community we can develop and pursue practices to improve overall mental health.
The main takeaways for our parents include:
nurture an open dialogue
become social media fluent
have a family online use plan
ensure regular oversight of social media usage
Jack advised students to be thoughtful in their usage of social media, to think twice, review their privacy settings, be cautious who they ‘friend’ and to take a break.
We look forward to continuing our relationship with Jack Veitch and our local CMHA branch.
