Athletics Action

1st Boys’ Tennis
Coaches: Sarah Thompson, Grant Elson
It was a tough day for the 1st Boys’ Tennis team. We were matched up against two of the strongest teams in the league and with very few practices this season because of the rain, we did not play our best. We were defeated by both UCC and RSGC. Highlights included watching Pedro’s fierce determination while playing with his arm cast still on, Shunya’s long battles from the baseline, and Max and Conor working well together setting up for great plays at the net to take 3 games off their tough opponents at RSGC and 1 game off UCC—the only game we got off the whole UCC team! We are looking forward to our next matches at home on Saturday and next Wednesday; please come on out to support both our boys and girls!

1st Girls’ Rugby
Coaches: April Loojie, Katie Garland
On Saturday May 5, the 1st Girl’s Rugby team played in a festival on Matthews Field here at Lakefield College School. Having few field practices and working with a fairly new squad, nerves were running high at the start of the day. The first match marked the first ever game for starters Bella Jackson, Dylan Clement, Olivia Vaughan and Chloe Hsu, who all stood their ground and showed tenacity in learning and taking on a new challenge. Other teammates who played their first ever match, eager to get rid of the jitters, yet fearless in the face of action, were Audrey Desjardin, Averil Gougeon, Carlota Leal Munoz and Caroline Chen.

Overall the festival was a great success, having tied two matches and losing one, players were able to learn through playing. With only three players with previous rugby experience, our team relied on these players to step up, and did they ever! Paige Thompson’s athletic poise and willingness to throw tackles made her a fierce competitor.

Shout out to Captains Robyn-Lee Hotte and Betsy Macdonnell. Robyn scored all 3 tries for the team, and was a vocal leader to those learning the sport. Betsy, also leading charge, faced adversity in playing an entirely new position mid tournament as well as helping her own team run as a unit.

As we progress to next week, we are looking for some action from Valerie Chen and Emma Durach, who were unable to compete this week due to injury. Coach Katie and I could not be more proud of how quickly the team picked up the sport, and their compete level throughout the entire tournament, even with injuries arising. Great job team!
