Escaping with the Help of Math

By Dayna Taylor

Grade 10 math classes recently completed their culminating assignment – a math escape room. In small groups, students needed to solve eight problem-solving puzzles in order to unlock boxes, earn clues and ultimately escape the classroom.

All of the puzzles they solved were related to and reviewed course content. Above all else, it was an opportunity for communication and collaboration; students needed to work together to leverage their skills and support each other through the challenge. With a 60-minute time limit, the majority of groups were able to escape the room in time; the fastest group, consisting of Sam Chen, Chris Peng, Jeff Zheng, Jason Liu, Shirley Li, Sa Lin Fu and Justy Lin, escaped in only 49 minutes.
