Experiencing a Canadian Thanksgiving

By Jen Horrigan

Over the Thanksgiving Break, 28 students participated in a Canadian Thanksgiving Experience trip.  The trip itinerary included an overnight stay in Ottawa where students watched the Ottawa Senators, and LCS alumnus Cody Ceci ’11,  take on the Chicago Blackhawks in NHL hockey action. They learned about Canadian history and politics as they toured Parliament Hill, Rideau Hall and the Canadian War Museum and got "a real taste" of Canadian culture by feasting on poutine and the delectable pastry known as beavertails.  A trip to Canada's Wonderland for the Halloween Haunt left thrill seekers satisfied as they braved Canada's largest rollercoasters and tackled haunted houses and mazes throughout the park.  An excursion to the Norwood Fall Fair added another element of fun to the weekend as students enjoyed the mid-way, enjoyed horse and cattle shows and got a close look at a variety of Canadian farm animals.

Upon their return, all 28 students participating in the Thanksgiving trip were generously invited to the homes of nearby LCS families for Thanksgiving dinner.  They were treated to bonfires, fishing, boat rides and huge Thanksgiving feasts. The combination of friendship, food and the beauty of autumn in the Kawarthas gave our students a wonderful look at the tradition of Thanksgiving in Canada.  In addition to hosting Thanksgiving dinners for our students to experience, a number of families welcomed visiting students into their homes for the break.

For some of our boarding students, their home may be too far to travel for shorter school breaks and many are welcomed into the homes of our amazing network of LCS families.  Over the years, local LCS families have opened their homes to visiting students which have created friendships that reach across the world and last for years. Students return from break with wonderful stories of the laughter shared, sights seen and the memories made and a rejuvenated energy to engage in the opportunities ahead.
