Diversity & Inclusion

At Lakefield College School, we believe in the dignity and worth of all individuals. With roughly 400 students joining us from over 45 countries and eight provinces, we believe young people learn and mature best when they are encouraged to embrace their individuality within a richly diverse and supportive community. We welcome students and staff of all cultures, ethnicities, socioeconomic backgrounds, gender identities, religions, and sexual orientations, and believe that our community is strengthened by this diversity of perspectives. With this belief comes a commitment to learning from each other and leaning in to difficult discussions in order to grow our understanding. We strive to ensure that every member of our community feels a strong sense of confidence and belonging, reflective of who they are, and that they leave LCS with an understanding of how they can contribute to society in a positive and meaningful way.

We know that fostering a truly equitable and inclusive community requires dedication and continual focus. We are committed to examining and strengthening our work across the entire organization, ensuring leadership and accountability, programming, policies and processes, and a lived community experience that fully embodies and champions the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI).

Leadership & Accountability

From strengthening intercultural competencies through a common set of school values, and taking measure of key community metrics, to fostering leadership and accountability at all levels of our school community—our Board of Directors, Head of School & Foundation, Leadership Team, faculty and staff leaders, and student leaders—we are focussed on actively practising, fostering and promoting an environment of diversity, equity and inclusion at LCS.

Programming

Part of our ongoing journey, and a core element of our strategy, includes a comprehensive review and the integration of diversity, equity and inclusion themes across all aspects of our program. Everyone at Lakefield College School is expected to engage actively in this important work. These practices are part of ensuring that every student is able to thrive – safe, seen, and supported. We know that by creating programming to meet the needs of students, we will help our students to embody, champion and carry-forward these vital principles throughout their lives.

Policies & Processes

Lakefield College School is committed to ensuring that the policies and processes underpinning all aspects of the school’s operations are equipped to effectively promote and safeguard the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion. From tuition and affordability, admissions recruitment, governance and human resources policies, to awareness, education and training and redress policies, it is incumbent upon LCS to continually review these core aspects of its DEI strategy.

Community Experience

The truest measure of our ongoing journey with diversity, equity and inclusion work is represented within the lived experience of each of our community members—current and prospective students, alumni, parents, faculty, staff, donors, and friends of Lakefield College School. LCS is committed to continuous improvement and to identifying how we can better foster feelings of safety and inclusivity within our community and beyond. This includes examining our biases and creating a culture that engages unfamiliar ideas, perspectives, and people to create the conditions for dramatic and meaningful growth, and change, when necessary. It includes looking carefully at the experiences we’ve helped to create in the past, in order to determine the best path forward for our current students and for the generations of students yet to come.
