Intersession Days

On Friday, November 17, our students experienced their  second Intersession Day of the year. Intersession Days provide a variety programming, and are reserved for experiential learning activities of mind, body, or spirit that cannot fit within our regular program day schedule. They are an integral aspect of the Leadership, Character, Values program which all students at LCS get to be part of.

If you have any questions regarding intersession days, please do not hesitate to contact Peter O’Grady.

Thinking Outside
Grade 9 students participated in two workshops with Nancy Thomson from Peterborough based organization Think Outside. Students were given opportunities to learn more about each other, and themselves, through a variety of activities that focussed on communication, body language and character strengths. Nancy challenged the students to dig deep, and by the end of the day, many students were openly sharing with the class how they live their top character strength here at LCS.

Giving Back and Looking Forward
Tying in both our Healthy, Caring Community and Citizenship Values, the pillar for the Grade 10 year is Stewardship, encouraging our Grade 10s to think about how they can take care of others and give back to their community.

This week, the Grade 10s had the opportunity to give back as a group and also to start thinking about what they can contribute to our local community as individuals. The group travelled to the Kawartha Nordic Ski Club (KNSC), a local not-for-profit organization about 20 minutes north of the school.  Governed by a volunteer board of directors, and operated by numerous volunteers, the KNSC trails are used by both our Outdoor Education classes and our LCS Nordic ski team during the winter.  Working in small groups, students helped with trail maintenance by pruning bushes and removing rocks along the ski trails as well as preparing the chalet for the upcoming ski season by painting ski racks and flag poles, washing windows and vacuuming.

As a group, the Grade 10s contributed more than 150 hours of human power to the ski club - members of the KNSC Board were thrilled with all that they were able to accomplish!

Students celebrated their contributions by enjoying hot apple cider and hot chocolate in the late fall sunshine.

Back on campus, students collaborated in small groups to identify their common values and choose a social issue that connected with their shared value. In their groups, they then reached out to a local organization/ NGO that works to combat this issue. During our next Intersession Day, students will be meeting with these organizations to learn more about how they work to address their social issue, the challenges they face and the successes they experience. Ultimately, students will be challenged to explore how they can use their own skills, passions and talents to give back to their chosen organizations. We are looking forward to supporting their creative and passionate ideas!

Becoming More Self Aware
LCS students are often challenged to work in teams to take on challenges and organize events. This Intersession Day focussed on working together through the lens of self-awareness. If we can all develop a sense of who we are and how we work with others, then ultimately we will learn to collaborate better. This is very important when looking towards future studies and careers. The Grade 11s spent their morning in a workshop with Heather Clayton, a coach who focuses on education and leadership. The workshop challenged students to develop strategies, set goals and create awareness around themselves so that they can better work in teams.

Using the “Marshmallow Challenge,” students were divided into groups of five and asked to build the largest freestanding structure that can support a single marshmallow.  They were given 20 sticks of spaghetti, 1 meter of tape, 1 meter of string, and a time limit of 18 minutes. When time ran out, we saw many unique structures of varying height with the winning group reaching 57 centimetres tall.

Looking forward, the Grade 11s will be tasked with organizing the school-wide holiday party in December and an entire week dedicated to global literacy in April. It was a great way for everyone to see themselves as a team player, regardless of personality type.

LCS Seniors Dream Big About Developing Northcote Campus
Our grads spent the morning in the Learning Commons working on a "Design Sprint" exercise chaired by Bruce McMahon. The goal was to have student input in thinking about and developing the Northcote Campus.  Mr. McMahon provided a very interesting and entertaining history of the Northcote farm and how it came to be part of Lakefield College School. Using this as the foundation, students were charged with dreaming big; what could the Northcote Campus become? How could it enhance the student experience at LCS in the future?  The exercise is designed to reflect the Leadership focus of the Grade 12 year by encouraging students to practise  effective communication, listen to each other, and most important, learn how to build on the ideas of others.

Students were first provided with the chance to dream and think individually. Then, divided into eight teams, the discussions and collaboration began as students flushed out unbelievably creative and unique ideas.

The session ended with a gallery walk where everyone was able to view the collaborative efforts of each of the eight teams and share the enthusiasm and creativity within the grad class.

Our grads were incredibly focused and enthusiastic and determined to provide Mr. McMahon with amazing ideas for the Northcote Campus.

Networking with LCS Alumni and Frends to  Discover Career Opportunities
Our Grade 11s and 12s spent the afternoon learning about different career opportunities that lay ahead for them. From fine arts to engineering to veterinary medicine, students were able to ask questions to LCS community members in a wide range of vocational fields.

As students think about their university options, career day provides an opportunity to develop a fuller understanding of career aspirations and to learn about the many possibilities that exist in the working world.
